The weighted average
When categories carry different weights, multiply each score by its weight as a decimal and add the results: 90% homework at 30%, 80% midterm at 30%, and 75% final at 40% gives 27 + 24 + 30 = 81%. Small weights absorb weak scores; heavy ones amplify everything.
Why the weights must sum to 100
A weighted average only represents the whole course when the weights account for the whole course. If they sum to 90%, the missing 10% silently vanishes and the number reads low; at 110% it inflates. The calculator refuses to average until you reconcile them — usually an unentered category is the culprit.
Weighted grades vs. total points
In a points system, a 20-point quiz and a 200-point final differ exactly 10-fold and the arithmetic is plain division. Weighted categories break that link — a 10-point quiz inside a 40% quiz category carries as much weight as the category allows. Same course, different accounting: use whichever model the syllabus names.
Worked example
Syllabus: homework 30%, midterm 30%, final 40%.
Scores so far: 90%, 80%, and 75% on the final.
Contribution: 90×0.30 + 80×0.30 + 75×0.40.
Weighted grade: 27 + 24 + 30 = 81.0% — a B.
How to use it
Copy each category weight from the syllabus.
Enter your current score in each category.
Fix the weights if the checker flags a total other than 100%.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight as a decimal, then add the products. Homework 90 at 30%, midterm 80 at 30%, final 75 at 40% totals 0.30×90 + 0.30×80 + 0.40×75 = 81%.
What if my category weights do not add up to 100%?
Something is missing — usually a category you have not entered. This calculator stops and tells you the current total rather than quietly averaging, because a number from incomplete weights misrepresents the course grade.
How is a weighted grade different from total points?
Total points divides points earned by points possible, so each assignment matters exactly in proportion to its points. Weighted categories decouple the two — a tiny quiz inside a heavily weighted category can matter more than a big exam in a light one.
Can a weighted grade exceed 100%?
Yes, if extra credit pushes a category score above 100 and that category carries weight. A 105% homework average at 30% weight adds 31.5 points to the blend instead of 30.
Why does my portal grade differ from my calculation?
Portals often handle edge cases differently — dropping lowest scores, excluding empty categories from the denominator, or applying rounding per assignment. Check the syllabus’s fine print before assuming either number is wrong.
How does a heavy final exam weight affect my grade?
A 50% final moves your grade by up to half the distance between your other work and whatever you score — in either direction. High-weight exams concentrate risk, which is exactly what the what-if rows in the final grade calculator quantify.
