How age is counted
Calendar age is not a division — it is a subtraction with borrowing. Subtract year, month, and day parts separately; if the day runs short, borrow the length of the previous month; if the month runs short, borrow twelve. That is why 2026-11-01 minus 1990-01-01 is exactly 36 years, 10 months, 0 days.
Totals and the leap-year wrinkle
The board also reports the span as totals — months, weeks-and-days, days, hours. Those come from the actual calendar: the 13,000-plus days between 1990 and 2026 include nine February 29ths, which is why dividing the day count by 365 always drifts low. The countdown to the next birthday is computed on the same calendar.
Timezones and “today”
Both dates are compared at UTC midnight, so the answer does not depend on where the page is opened from, and daylight saving cannot shift a day count. The reference date field simply starts at today’s date; set it to a wedding, reunion, or retirement date to get age on that day instead.
Worked example
Born January 1, 1990 — how old on November 1, 2026?
Calendar subtraction: 36 years, 10 months, 0 days.
Totals: 13,453 days — 1,921 weeks and 6 days — 322,872 hours.
Next birthday (2027-01-01) is 61 days away; Jan 1, 1990 was a Monday.
How to use it
Enter the birth date.
Leave the reference date as today, or set the day you want the age on.
Read the years-months-days age and the totals underneath.

Frequently asked questions
How is age in years, months, and days calculated?
By subtracting the date parts separately and borrowing when the day or month runs short, exactly like subtracting by hand. The borrow uses the real length of the previous month — 28, 29, 30, or 31 days — so month boundaries behave correctly.
Why does the total-day count not equal years × 365?
Leap days. The span from 1990-01-01 to 2026-11-01 packs 13,453 days into 36 years and 10 months because nine Februaries in that window had 29 days. Dividing by 365.25 only approximates what the calendar actually did.
What happens with a February 29 birthday?
In common years the anniversary rolls to March 1 here. Some jurisdictions treat it as February 28 for legal purposes; the difference is one day, but it can matter on a deadline.
Can I calculate age at a past or future date?
Yes — set the reference date to any day: age at a wedding, a reunion, or the start of Social Security. The field defaults to today, but nothing stops you from pointing it at 2030.
Does time of day or timezone change the result?
No. Both dates are compared at UTC midnight, so the tool counts whole calendar days the same way for every reader. Time of birth is ignored — calendar age starts on the date, not the hour.
