The real formulas behind the scoreboard

The NFL passer rating is four capped components over six times a hundred — the page shows each component so 158.3 stops being magic. Dice odds are computed by exact enumeration, not simulation: every one of the 46,656 outcomes of 6d6 is counted. Lottery odds are honest combinatorics: C(69,5) × 26.

Probability intuitions worth fixing

Five heads in a row is 1-in-32, but the sixth flip is still 50-50 — streaks describe the past, not the next event. And an ace in a five-card poker hand is about 30%, one of the most underestimated numbers in cards.

Worked example

  1. A quarterback: 320/480, 3,800 yards, 28 TD, 10 INT.
  2. Completion component: (0.667−0.3)×5 = 1.833.
  3. Yards: (7.92−3)×0.25 = 1.229; TDs: 20×0.0583 = 1.167.
  4. INTs: 2.375−25×0.0208 = 1.854 → rating ≈ 101.4.

How to use it

  3. Read the result and the exact formula beneath.
  4. For dice, roll again by changing any field.

Frequently asked questions

What is a perfect NFL passer rating?

158.3, reached when all four components hit their 2.375 caps: at least 77.5% completions, 12.5 yards per attempt, 11.9% touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

How is a magic number calculated?

Magic number = your wins remaining + your current wins − the rival’s current losses, plus one. It falls by one for every win you get or loss they take.

Are the dice probabilities simulated?

No — exact enumeration. The member counts every equally likely outcome for the dice pool, so P(3d6 ≥ 15) is a count of 108 of 216, not an estimate. Sample rolls are genuinely random, though.

What are Powerball odds really?

1 in 292,201,338 for the jackpot: C(69,5) = 11,238,513 ways to miss the white balls in order-independent fashion, times 26 for the red ball. The member reproduces this exactly.

How accurate is the dunk calculator?

It estimates standing reach as 1.33 × height. Arm length varies by 3–4 inches between people of the same height, so measure your reach against a wall for the honest number.

Why does the coin member keep saying 50/50?

Because that is the truth the gambler’s fallacy hides: streaks have memory, coins do not. The member computes the streak odds and states this next to them.
